The First Lady, Mrs Patience Jonathan, has called for greater global
efforts on the protection of internet users, especially children and
youths.
Jonathan, who is the Global Child Online Protection Champion, made
the call in Abuja on Saturday ahead of the Safer Interment Day which
would be marked globally on Tuesday
This was contained in a statement signed by Mrs Ayotunde Adesugba, a Director of Information in the Presidency.
Jonathan called on stakeholders to take practical steps to promote
international and national policies, programmes and educational
initiatives to improve child online safety.
She urged the International Telecommunication Union, (ITU) member
states and sector members to continually build capacity and develop
programmes and curricula to address the safe and responsible use of
Information, Communication Technology.
``It is important that ITU members states share experiences and
contribute expertise and resources to develop practical tools to help
minimise online risks to children,’’ the statement read in part.
The wife of the president further advocated for the same rights of
freedom of speech, association and privacy granted in the real world to
be extended online.
It will be recalled that the call for the protection of children in
cyber space was renewed in May 2013 when the First Lady was made the
Global Child Online Protection Champion by the ITU and the International
Multilateral Partnership Against Cyber Threats.
