Abuja – The National Chairman of the PDP, Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, on Wednesday said that Nigeria has the potential to produce great leaders like the late Nelson Mandela of South Africa.
He said this in Abuja during a ceremony organised by the All Niger Delta People’s Congress for the conferment of merit awards on deserving Nigerians.
Tukur said this was possible because of the huge human resources which the country was endowed with.
He said Mandela was noted for the struggles to liberate his race from oppression under the defunct apartheid regime in South Africa.
This, according to him, earns him global recognition even in death.
He urged members of the congress to emulate the virtues of the late Mandela in their agitation.
Tukur extolled the virtues of leaders of the South-South youths and commended their efforts in ensuring better life for the people in the zone.
He also commended their willingness to stand by the government of President Goodluck Jonathan to carry on with his transformation agenda.
He urged them to always be broad-minded in their approach to issues, adding that Nigerian youths in general, should begin to operate on the world stage.

The PDP national chairman commended the congress for encouraging outstanding performances among public and private servants in the country.
He said as chairman of the party, he would not give up fighting for what was right and good for Nigerians.
Tukur said that the political struggles he had been engaged in the last two years had made a militant of a sort.
“I am also a militant because I engage in political struggles to make our country better. I am a militant for justice, fair play, equity and human rights.”
Tukur said that being militant had pre-disposed him to withstand pressures from adversaries who prefer to turn him into “a lame duck” chairman.
He said that he would continue to be militant in the fight for justice, equity and equal rights among members of the PDP at all times.
Tukur said his militancy disposition was inspired by his long association with the youth from the Niger Delta.
He said that most of them were unrelenting in fighting for justice and recognition in Nigeria, using all legitimate means.
“Yes, in Niger Delta there are militants. I am a militant too because the youth believe in equity and justice.”
“And many of them used all legitimate means to get the attention of the government to the sufferings by the people.”
The PDP national chairman, who was special guest of honour at the occasion, was conferred with an award of the “Foremost Friend of Niger Delta”.
The Chief Organiser of the ceremony, Joejim Alaboso, while presenting the award to him, said Tukur was considered for an award because of his fatherly roles.
According to him, Tukur has been playing significant role in moulding youths from the zone for greater challenges as Nigerians.
Tukur, he said, had sufficiently reflected fatherly inclinations toward the Niger Delta zone at all times, adding that the people would continue to accord him greater respect.
