UNICEF To Open Office In Borno

The United Nations Children Fund (UNICEF) said on Monday that it planned to open an office in Borno, to address problems relating to children's rights in the state.

Miss Jean Gough, the UNICEF Country Representative, announced this during a courtesy visit to Gov. Kashim Shettima in Maiduguri.

Gough said the action was aimed at creating more impact in the state.

"Before now the UNICEF office in Bauchi used to be in charge of Borno and other states.

"We have decided to open an office in Borno because we believe that we will have more impact in terms of our operations,'' she said.

Gough said UNICEF hoped to partner with the state government to address children's rights in three key areas.

"We are looking forward to a partnership with the state government in the area of primary health care, especially in some local government areas identified as needing support.

"We also want to support you in the area of polio eradication as well as tackling the problem of malnutrition among children,'' she said.

Responding, Shettima thanked the UNICEF team for the visit and assured that government would partner with the organisation to uplift the living condition of children in the state.
